German, British Markets Gear Up For iPhone

By Anjishnu Biswas, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Four months after its successful launch in the United States, Apple’s (News - Alert) iPhone will make its European debut as the device goes on sale in Germany and Britain on Friday.

Rene Bresgen, spokesman for Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert) AG’s T-Mobile, the sole carrier for the iPhone in Germany said, “We assume that the device will find a very good reception on the market.” The chosen carrier for the iPhone (News - Alert) in Britain is mobile operator O2.

The iPhone, an Internet enabled, cell phone-iPod media player, received a tremendous response in the U.S. with sales exceeding 1.4 million since it first arrived on the scene in June.

In comparison to the price of iPhone charged by Apple in the United States, consumers in Britain will pay nearly $67 more by paying 269 pounds (~$566) for the 8GB model. In Germany the exclusive phone will be available for 399 euros (~$587.41). Both prices earmarked for Apple’s iPhone in Germany and Brirain are inclusive of value-added tax.

In Britain, Apple, O2, and Carphone Warehouse stores are employing additional staff in an attempt to cope up with the anticipated blitz of iPhone enthusiasts, but observers feel doubtful about the prospect of the device generating the same degree of consumer passion as witnessed in the United States.

Apple Inc. reduced the cost of the 8GB iPhone in the United States from $599 to $399 and stopped selling the $499 4GB edition.

The iPhone will be sold in France by France Telecom (News - Alert) with the help of its wireless wing, Orange, within the next couple of weeks.

The phone will not run on Europe’s fastest cellular data networks, like in the United States. But when it’s inside the reach of a Wi-Fi hotspot, it bonds with the faster technology automatically.
