Samsung Electronics Acquires Display Technology Innovator Liquavista

By Andrew Litz, TMCnet Web Editor

Today, Liquavista, a provider of electronic display technology for use with mobile phones, media players, electronic readers, and other mobile devices, announced that, in a buyout of all shares from past shareholders, it has been acquired by Samsung (News - Alert) Electronics. The terms of this acquisition will make Liquavista, which was spun off from Philips in 2006, a fully owned affiliate of Samsung Electronics.

As a result of the acquisition, there have been a number of changes to Liquavista’s management team, including the replacement of former CEO Guy Demuynck by Johan Feenstra.

“We are thrilled by this event,” said Johan Feenstra, Liquavista’s founder and newly appointed CEO. “The outright acquisition of Liquavista by the largest electronics company in the world is the fulfillment of a strategy dating back to the original spinout, and confirmation of the disruptive potential that our technology will have in the display market.”

“In the future, consumers will need products that not only support full color and video but offer readability in all lighting conditions and gives them ultimate freedom and portability.” Johan Feenstra added, “Being part of Samsung, we can all be sure that Electrowetting Display Technology will find its way to the market in the fastest possible time.”

The electrowetting cell concept is used to build digital displays, and this technology from Liquavista is well-suited for such mobile applications as e-readers — including Apple’s (News - Alert) iPad, Amazon’s Kindle, and the Nook from Barnes and Noble — mobile phones, GPS devices, portable media players, and cameras.

The use of the electrowetting technology results in screens that are flexible, have good color contrast, are durable, and can be read outdoors in difficult lighting conditions — a challenge with traditional LCDs — while providing high refresh rates and low power consumption that improves battery life. As technology changes the ways in which consumers access media for entertainment and information, these considerations are becoming increasingly important.
