DisplayLink Technology Makes Hooking up Additional Monitors as Easy as U S B

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

Not sure what to buy your loved one for the holidays? Not sure what to put on your own wishlist? DisplayLink Corp., a fabless chip and software company, suggested Thursday that a great gift idea is a second or third computer monitor.

Adding another display, the company said, can increase productivity and result in a more enjoyable digital experience. For example, multiple screens enable users to spread applications out—with a work project on one, e-mail and Skype (News - Alert) sections on another and an Internet browser on a third.

Traditionally, adding another display meant buying a special video card for the computer, and also some technical skills to get everything set up. DisplayLink claims these hassles are a thing of the past, thanks to its USB graphics technology—offered through the company’s consumer product distributors, Kensington, IOGEAR, LG and Toshiba (News - Alert).

The company said its technology enables computer monitors to be hooked up using a USB connection. This technology is used, for example, in LG’s 20-inch FlatronWide L206WU monitor, which sells for $349. This high-resolution monitor can be added to any computer with a free USB port.

Laptop users can achieve a similar setup by hooking their computers to a docking station with additional USB 2.0 ports—like Toshiba’s Dynadock ($149.99) or Kensington’s Notebook Docking Station with Video ($139.99).

DisplayLink even has a solution for users who want to hook up non-USB monitors to a computer, but not mess with graphics cards. IOGEAR’s External Video Card adapter (99.95) has a VGA connector on one side and a USB connector on the other.

All of the products highlighted here allow users running Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows XP and Vista to hook up as many as six monitors.
