BoxTone Announces Availability of Download of BoxTone DST Expert

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

BoxTone has announced the availability of the download of its highly successful DST Expert for BlackBerry (News - Alert) tool, according to a PRWeb news report. The software is specifically designed to facilitate Blackberry patch deployments by enterprises as well as government agencies looking to transition from Daylight Saving Time back to Standard Time on November 4, 2007.

“For large enterprises and government agencies -- with multiple BlackBerry Enterprise Server and thousands of users -- the Daylight Saving Time update and patch process proved to be both complex and time consuming,” Alan Snyder, CEO, BoxTone, was quoted as saying in the report. “The later transition back to Standard Time will unfortunately lead to incorrect time and date displays for any enterprise user left out of the prior patch and update efforts. BoxTone wants to make sure IT administrators can proactively work to eliminate any DST-related user complaints from ever happening.”

Released for the first time in February, 2007, the BoxTone DST Expert was used by more than 1,000 enterprises for patching and updating their BlackBerry users. With feedback from BES administrators, the software was enhanced and launched again during fall. The second edition is supported by both a BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange and BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM (News - Alert) Lotus Domino environment.

The Fall Edition offers BES administrators the ability to monitor and manage the deployment of DST patches and updates in BlackBerry smartphones that were affected. The functions enabled by the software include:

  • Scanning of the BlackBerry environment to generate reports. The reports reflect the software version and DST patch status for all user devices
  • Identifying and communicating specific instructions for the deployment of DST patches for every individual user. Device configuration is also enabled
  • Monitoring affected smartphones to find out if they are completely patched, updated, and ready for the final transition to Standard Time

Last year, DST had begun on the first Sunday of April. It ended on the last Sunday of October. As of March 2007, it had begun on the second Sunday in March and will now end on the first Sunday in November.

Research in Motion (News - Alert) had initially advised BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrators that they apply the specified patches and updates before the transition to DST. In doing so, they can ensure that appointment and calendar errors are avoided.

BoxTone has advised enterprise BES administrators to implement all Research in Motion DST resolutions in full, in addition to other appropriate patches and updates.
