Glu Mobile has launched the classic Atari arcade hit, Asteroids, for mobile phones. Atari released the original arcade game in 1979, which became one of the most recognized and successful arcade games of all time. This classic retro space shooter has been reinvented 28 years later specifically for the mobile platform.
The new version includes new enhancements such as innovative new themes, bonuses and gameplay modes, as well as "classic mode" providing gamers the gameplay and graphics true to the original game.
“ Asteroids captures the timeless energy and addictive gameplay of the original arcade game, a true reminder of the hours spent at the arcade, but also gives gamers completely new themes, gameplay and graphics that take advantage of today's technology,” said Jill Braff, senior vice president of global publishing, Glu in a statement.
“Gamers young and old love retro arcade classics like this one and people will be pleasantly surprised by the game's modern depth and sophistication,” she added.
Glu reports that the new Asteroids is already being praised by the gaming industry experts and has earned a 4-star rating (out of 5) as well as an Editor's Award from WGWorld.com.
“It's the same shooter in every sense of the word with extra stuff added on to make it that much more fun. This is another classic for mobile re-done just right,” comments WGWorld.com reviewer Jesse Garcia.
The newest mobile version of Asteroids encompasses several features which modernize the experience yet keep it true to original, old-skool game play including option to play the game in classic mode, a mobile reproduction of the original arcade version; a coup for gaming purists and many more.
