While tailgating in traffic creates a potentially dangerous situation, tailgating when it comes to accessing a secure location, presents an even more serious problem.
To ensure secure access to buildings, authorized users are usually given a RFID of smart card for swiping. However, as a way to around this system, tailgaters are gaining access by simply sliding in close behind authorized user. This presents a giant problem in attempts to offer better security.
To combat this growing security breach, new anti-tailgating software, TetraGate, from epcSolutions was introduced to the market. This solution combines RFID tracking and facial recognition biometrics to provide a truly secure access solution for buildings.
TetraGate was developed specifically to fight these tailgating attacks and combines technologies from their partners including, American Barcode and RFID, Zebra Card, Symbol Technologies (News
), Fulcrum Biometrics and Infinova.
The technology behind the software includes Generation 2 EPC (Electronic Product Code) and RFID (Radio Frequency
Identification) open protocols that are able to read cards from up to 25 feet away. To provide further security, the software also utilizes facial recognition technology to verify identities. Whenever the system finds a mismatch between a facial scan and a badge, they alert security to pursue the matter further. This eliminates the ability of tailgaters, and potential safety hazards in building access security while also ensuring that all who enter the buildings or areas, truly have access to be there.
According to a news release
, the system also has the ability to, for the first time, "associate assets in a zone—e.g., a person with a laptop." This enhances security with the ability to track not only people in a secure zone, but physical assets as well.
