CAIXA Deploys Lumidigm Fingerprint Sensors in ATMs

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Lumidigm is a company that collects and processes biometric images in a way that makes fingerprint authentication and identification more dependable, more inclusive and more reliable than other fingerprint sensors, which are vulnerable to numerous conditions including the presence of topical contaminants, moisture, and bright ambient light.

Recently, the company announced that it was installing fingerprint sensors into automated teller machines (ATMs) of Brazil’s second largest state-owned bank, CAIXA. The company has joined hands with partners Diebold, Incorporated, for this project, and Griaule, a Brazilian-based software company that is providing supporting software.

Lumidigm fingerprint sensors make use of multispectral imaging technology which reads fingerprints both on and below the skin. This technology makes use of a richer biometric data set for higher biometric performance and passes the advantages on to bank customers. These customers get a convenient and intuitive access to the system, and the bank is provided a secure and reliable ATM network, the company stated in a press release.

“Our fingerprint sensors are reliable and intuitive — perfect for unattended applications such as ATM access,” says Bill Spence, Lumidigm’s VP of Transaction Systems, said in a company press release. “CAIXA customers simply insert their card and touch the fingerprint reader to conveniently withdraw their funds from the ATM and be on their way. No PIN to remember, no training required. It’s that simple.”

Recently, KSI joined hands with Lumidigm Mariner fingerprint reader into the KSI-1700 professional series keyboard system, the most advanced combined keyboard system available today. Providing combined security and auto ID in a HIPAA-compliant desktop solution, the KSI-1700 keyboard system with the Lumidigm reader will be unveiled soon.
