Cross Match Technologies, Inc., has announced that it acquired the biometric authentication business of Labcal Technologies Inc., a Canadian-based provider of ruggedized mobile and wireless biometric solutions for identification and authentication.
The company has also acquired Labcal’s SmartProfile single sign on (SSO) business in the transaction. Cross Match will integrate Labcal’s Canadian operations into its global organization.

In 2006, Labcal took mobile authentication to a new level with the introduction of the Be.U Mobile, a handheld fingerprint and smart card reader that supports multiple biometric algorithms. The Be.U Mobile catered to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) military’s needs for harsh environmental conditions, known as MIL-STD-810F and the IP65 Ingress Protection rating.
Cross Match President and Chief Executive Officer, James W. Ziglar, said in a company press release, “The addition of Labcal’s biometric authentication technology and expertise is an important extension of Cross Match’s ever-expanding product and solution offerings and meets our customers’ needs for mobile and wireless solutions. Going forward, Labcal’s best-in-class technology and world class research and development team will expedite our release of the next generation of advanced multimodal mobile and wireless biometric solutions. Combining Labcal’s technology with Cross Match’s broad biometric portfolio and global customer base will allow us to deliver the industry’s best mobile and wireless biometric identity management solutions.”
Labcal’s ruggedized, handheld biometric authentication products are equipped with public key infrastructure (PKI) technologies and smart card which help the effective and secure mobile and wireless solutions. Using its TruBlue fingerprint and smart card readers, the company also offers an advanced, unique and secure SSO solution.
