BIO-key International and its partner, DaProSystems have won a contract from the Harrisonburg, VA Police Department for a mobile data solution.

DaProSystems' public safety system records management system (RMS) software have been used by Harrisonburg's police department since 1999.

MobileCop, BIO-key's wireless query and messaging solution and DaProSystems' Mobile FR field reporting tool will be deployed in laptops across the police department's patrol vehicle fleet. Leveraging this newly integrated system, patrol officers will be able to communicate silently and securely with the dispatch center, query state and federal criminal justice databases. The officers will also be able to complete and submit field reports on-scene from within their vehicles.

Captain Dan Claytor of the Harrisonburg Police Department said that allowing officers to obtain information on outstanding arrest warrants and stolen vehicles directly without the assistance of a dispatcher -- and enabling them to complete incident reports while in the field rather than the station -- will make their entire department more productive and effective.

The companies explain that the current contract is the first phase in the development of a planned regional mobile data system. Following the rollout, the regional dispatch center, using DaProSystems' computer aided dispatch (CAD) software, will be able to monitor and deploy the status of MobileCop and PocketCop-enabled police, fire and rescue units throughout Harrisonburg County.

Lieutenant Kurt Boshart of the Harrisonburg Police Department noted that ultimately this will give them an interoperable data communications system that will help them get the right resources they need to respond to any incident anywhere in the County.
