Polycom Unveils ViaVideo
Polycom has introduced ViaVideo, a desktop video communications appliance that integrated a multimedia processor and camera for two-way video, voice, and data transmission in a single device. ViaVideo's full-screen, full-motion images transmit at 30 frames per second, and an integrated microphone features Polycom's full-duplex Acoustic Clarity Technology (ACT) for clear voice quality with echo cancellation. At an MSRP of $599, ViaVideo offers enterprises of all sizes, as well as telecommuters, affordable, two-way, high-quality video over IP networks.

Motorola Installs 250,000 Voice Packets Worldwide
Motorola's Multiservice Networks Division (MND) announced that it has reached 250,000 voice ports installed worldwide. "Hitting this target shows that service providers, as well as end-user organizations, have sized up the potential for converged networks carrying voice as well as data and are starting to adopt it in significant numbers," said Neil Fairbrother, global marketing manager for Motorola's Vanguard Voice. Texas Instruments unveiled the first device in its next generation of power-efficient programmable DSPs. The new TMS320C5510 DSP device delivers half the power per million instructions per seconds (MIPS) of many DSPs currently shipping The C55x DSP generation will deliver as low as one-sixth the power and up to five times the performance of current offerings. Jfax has changed its name to J2 Communications, as a result of expanded services. In addition to sending and receiving faxes, new services include conference calling and voice messaging. Users can initiate conference calls without operator assistance or reservations. They can easily manage the call, put people on hold, and add or disconnect callers. Voice messages can be received at the users's jconnect number and are forwarded to an e-mail inbox as an audio file attachment.
