Siemens Power Generation will establish its U.S. wind turbine blade manufacturing site at Fort Madison, Iowa. The new facility is expected to employ around 250 people and will enable Siemens (News - Alert) to better meet the strong U.S. demand for wind power generators in the future.
Siemens’ first blade factory in the U.S. will be established in an existing 20,000 square meter building complex on more than 50 hectares in Lee County. The site is centrally located in the United States and is in close proximity to water, rail and road transportation options, making it ideal for wind turbine blade manufacturing.
The U.S. Department of Energy plans to obtain six percent of U.S. electricity from wind by 2020.Combined with the growing public demand for clean energy, the wind energy market is projected to triple by the year 2020.
“Since the initial acquisition of Bonus Energy A/S in 2004, we’ve acquired AN Wind Energie GmbH, opened an additional blade factory in Denmark, and now this is another important step in our strategy to grow our presence in the wind energy business, and serve the available markets,” said Randy Zwirn, president and CEO of Siemens Power Generation and member of the PG Group Executive Management in a press release.
Following the up gradation and expansion of the new facility, Siemens will start the series production of rotor blades for wind turbines in the first half of 2007.
