Wa-Hi students bring home hardware from FBLA conferenceFeb 08, 2013 (Walla Walla Union-Bulletin - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ADVERTISEMENT WALLA WALLA -- Students in Walla Walla High School's Future Business Leaders of America chapter competed at a regional conference earlier this week. The 15 students representing the Blue Devils took part in the Southeast Region Winter Leadership Conference in Kennewick on Monday. The competition drew about 150 students representing 12 area schools, and competing in 40 events, said Scott Reardon, FBLA advisor at Wa-Hi. "To say that this was the best regional performance I have ever seen would be an understatement," Reardon wrote in an email. "These kids were better prepared than any group I have ever had." Reardson said students met on Sundays over several weeks to prepare, and the time they put in, combined with hard work, paid off in competition. "I am so proud of all of our chapter members for the effort they have put forth to be successful," he said. Students brought home many team and individual awards by placing in the top five of their events. Students Emily Atkinson, Catherine Feistner and Russell Skorina took first place as a team in business ethics. Another team, represented by Lea Davidson, Hannah Hampson and Brenda Lopez, took second place in the event. Davidson, Hampson and Eleanor Rassbach earned first place as a team in emerging business issues, while the team of Atkinson, Feistner and Perla Villegas took third in the event. Villegas, Travis Stinebaugh and Sarah Berglin took fourth place in management decision making; Berglin and Villegas also took fifth place in business presentation. Students who took first-place individual awards in their events were: Hampson for business law; Kayla Crain in client service; Davidson in public speaking II; Rassbach in economics and personal finance; and Stinebaugh in both computer problem solving and technology concepts. Placing second in their events were Tanya Esquivel in public speaking II; Davidson in client services; and Stinebaugh in business calculations. Also competing and placing was Esmeralda Cruz, who earned fourth place in creed, and Jennifer Lara, with third place in public speaking I. Team member Veronica Ocampo competed in personal finance individually, and management decision-making and business presentation with a team. The FBLA members will next compete in the State Leadership Conference April 25-27 in Spokane. Assisting in student preparation were Linda Schaub from Wa-Hi, Rory McClellan from Banner Bank and Brent Dunn from Valley Vision.
