China,Namibia : TELECOM NAMIBIA signed ZTE CORP to upgrade networks for its new arm LEO [TendersInfo (India)](TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Telecom Namibia has announced that the telecom firm has signed a contract with the Chinese ZTE Corp worth US$46 million in order to put up a unified mobile network for delivering an upgraded 2G/3G/4G networks to its newly acquired mobile subsidiary, Leo. The operation will begin straight away. Under the newly signed agreement, the company will have to design, plan, supply, deliver and execute the GSM and LTE network infrastructure for Leo as well as Telecom Namibia. The Telecom Namibia s Managing Director - Frans Ndoroma stated, "This will result in a major enhancement of Leo's network quality and efficiency, enabling improved customer experience and richer applications on the mobile platform, and strengthening Leo's competitiveness." The MD has further said that the U$46 million deal requires the phase-wise setting up of base stations. The rollout of base stations will be accomplished in three phases, including several road coverage sites across the country. Under the contracted requirements, ZTE will provide a converged switching platform for fixed as well as mobile service with an IMS (IP multimedia systems) core for individual multi-media communications. Ndoroma has added that the construction of the Group's network on an IMS core platform will provide huge benefits to the users related to price and service quality. He added, "With this unique platform we will optimise time, resources, and results on all IP communication services - from fixed and mobile phone calls to Internet access, from social networks to email. The Group's tactical direction is towards fixed-mobile convergence, according to the MD of Telecom Namibia. "More importantly, the IMS solution will also support most of Telecom Namibia's existing PSTN/ISDN services and other multiple legacy interfaces, such as POTS," stated Ndoroma. Along with the improvement stage for core network and Value-Added Services medium, the establishment of the base stations at first will be for the replacement of the present 2G sites of Leo and CDMA base stations operated by the telecom firm.
