Stromsburg to be site of seed research

STROMSBURG, Feb 08, 2013 (Columbus Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- DuPont Pioneer is bringing a new soybean research facility to Stromsburg this spring that's going to yield three additional research positions immediately and new, Nebraska-specific products.

The new location at 1110 E. Ninth St. will eventually require seven positions to enhance the agriculture company's soybean research.

The Stromsburg expansion will help build a knowledge base to support their new line of soybean seeds -- the 39-product T-Series to debut this year -- as well as develop a group of soybean products specifically designed for this climate -- seeds born and bred in Nebraska.

DuPont Pioneer Communications Manager Kerry Hoffschneider said the research facility in Nebraska will triple their ability to test crops locally and asses their performance against specific issues incumbent upon an area farmer.

Technical Services Manager Dan Berning said Nebraska crops are up against some unique challenges such as climactic stress and high soil acidity. On top of that, soybean crops face early disease pathogens and Sudden Death Syndrome, one of the top four soybean diseases that led to yield declines last year.

DuPont Pioneer had been assessing these threats through satellite stations established across the state through their Iowa soybean research station, one of five currently operating across the nation.

Berning said there were 89 sites in Nebraska where they tested high-yield techniques that produced 83.4 bushels per acre, well above the 39.6 bushels per acre the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported as the average nationwide yield in 2012.

The expansion is the result of negotiations that began about a year ago between Troy Lindsley, Cornerstone Bank vice president and Stromsburg branch manager, and the ag producer. Lindsley owned the research facility that Monsanto held since the mid-90s and vacated in 2011 that will house DuPont Pioneer's Stromsburg operations.
