*** Thomson Licensing Assigned Patent for Modifying a Coded Bitstream ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 29 -- Thomson Licensing, Boulogne-Billancourt, France, has been assigned a patent (8,358,703) developed by four co-inventors for a "modifying a coded bitstream." The co-inventors are Dekun Zou, Plainsboro, N.J., Jeffrey Adam Bloom, West Windsor, N.J., Peng Yin, West Windsor, N.J., and Oscar Divorra Escoda, Princeton, N.J.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "Implementations may relate to various aspects of modifying, or using, a coded bitstream, or to recovering watermarking information from data. In one implementation, a coded bitstream is modified to allow for the application of a watermark to the coded bitstream without changing the coding of any other syntax elements in the bitstream. This is performed by identifying conditions necessary to change a coded syntax element without disrupting the interpretation of subsequent coded elements. The coded syntax element is replaced with another coded value if the modified value generates the same decoding variables as the original value would have generated. Particular implementations focus on syntax elements coded using entropy coding, including, for example, Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC). Regardless of the type of coding or watermarking, various implementations may provide for recovering watermarking information. Particular implementations recover watermarking information using detection data and feature information." The patent application was filed on Nov. 2, 2007 (12/450,200). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PTXT&s1=8,358,703&OS=8,358,703&RS=8,358,703 Written by Satyaban Rath; edited by Hemanta Panigrahi.
