The Cards advanced to the contest with a semifinal win over Garrard County on Friday. Satellite had defeated Warren Central in the other semifinal game.

This marked the second year in a row that the two teams had played in the final game of this tournament. Wayne County and Satellite competed for the 2012 tournament championship and the Lions came out with that win 81-65.

The Cards knew they faced a tough challenge as they faced the New York team, but it was a challenge they handled well as they earned a 73-50 win.

"It was a great effort by our team today," said Wayne County Coach Rodney Woods. "They were really determined to win." "I really like the way we took one play at a time after getting the lead to just keep extending," he added.

Wayne County led 14-10 at the first stop, but Satellite was up 27-25 at the end of the half. The Cards owned the third quarter, scoring 23 points and taking a 48-32 lead, going into the final eight minutes.

The Cardinals were led by sophomore Peyton Woods who scored a game- high 44 points. Corey Stearns added 9 points and Jason Perkins finished with 8 points.

Wayne County connected on 23 of 53 from the field for 41 percent.

They hit 5 of 19 3-pointers for 26 percent and hit 11 of 30 from the free throw line for 73 percent.

Satellite Academy was led in scoring by Lawrence Beckett with 14 points. The Lions hit 22 of 62 from the field for 35 percent. They were 2 of 15 from beyond the arc for 13 percent and hit 4 of 11 from the free throw line for 36 percent.

Both teams grabbed 35 rebounds in the contest. Wayne County was led on the boards by Stearns and Dagan Shelton with 8 rebounds each.

Shelton and Woods led Wayne County in steals with 3 each. The Cards were led in assists by Trey Blevins with 6.

Wayne County committed 14 turnovers in the game, compared to 18 for Satellite.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 13-3 on the season, as they prepared to take a few days off for the New Year's holiday.

"The team has had a very good first half of the season. Now it is time to get some rest and start the second half," said Woods. "These guys have earned a few days off and we will start back to work on Wednesday." Next up for Wayne County was a contest on Saturday, January 5 at Clay County.
