Nokia and RIM sign license agreement to settle patent wars [Cihan News Agency (Turkey)]

(Cihan News Agency (Turkey) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HELSINKI (CIHAN)- Finnish mobile manufacturer has announced the signing of a license agreement with Canadian smartphone manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) that will settle all ongoing patent battles between both companies.

Back in May, Nokia filed lawsuits against RIM, HTC and Viewsonic alleging the companies were using up to 45 of its own patents with prior permission.

Last month Nokia took further action against BlackBerry manufacturer RIM across U.S., U.K. and Canada which would have ultimately prevented RIM from selling its BlackBerry devices that connected to Wi-Fi networks.

"Nokia has entered into a new patent license agreement with Research In Motion. The agreement will result in settlement of all existing patent litigation between the companies and withdrawal of pending actions in the US, UK and Canada related to a recent arbitration tribunal decision," a press release from Nokia announced.

Nokia has agreed to a one-time payment as well as on-going payments from the Canadian company while noting the specific terms were confidential.

"We are very pleased to have resolved our patent licensing issues with RIM and reached this new agreement, while maintaining Nokia's ability to protect our unique product differentiation," said Paul Melin, chief intellectual property officer at Nokia. "This agreement demonstrates Nokia's industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market." Nokia is noted to have invested up to EUR 45 billion in research and development and also owns around 10,000 patent families.

Nokia's legal action against HTC and Viewsonic will continue to stand.
