BRIEF: Last Blockbuster video store in Macon to close

Dec 21, 2012 (The Macon Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The last Blockbuster video store in Macon is closing.

The store began offering closing discounts Monday, and while "the closing day is fluid," it is scheduled to close Jan. 20, Marketing Manager Stephanie Kopet said in an e-mail from the Colorado-based company.

Once the Macon store closes, the store at 2907 Watson Blvd. in Warner Robins will be the only Blockbuster in the midstate.

Macon employees will be offered jobs at the Warner Robins store if any are available, Kopet said.

In 2011, Dish Network Corp. bought the struggling video chain for $320 million after it filed for bankruptcy and announced it would close about 10 percent of the Blockbuster stores, keeping about 1,500 open. But in early 2012, Dish Network officials said the company would be closing more stores than originally planned.

In late January, the company announced that the stores on Zebulon Road and Hartley Bridge Road in Macon and the one on Russell Parkway in Warner Robins were closing.
