Swisscom to install communications network in Martigny and Charrat

Dec 05, 2012 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- Swisscom AG, a telecommunications provider, has announced that it will be installing the high-speed communications network in Martigny and Charrat.

In Martigny, Swisscom is laying fiber-optic cabling to individual homes and businesses (FTTH). At the same time, it will be testing new Fiber to the Street (FTTS) technology in Charrat. Residents of both communities will benefit from bandwidths of up to 100 Mbps which will allow them to watch HDTV, use multimedia services and enjoy high-speed internet access.

According to the company, construction work is due to begin in the Bourg district of Martigny in the second quarter of 2013. In all, 9000 homes and businesses in the town - about 95 percent of the total - will be connected with FTTH in the coming years. The first customers in Martigny should be able to receive fiber-optic-based services by the second half of 2013.

Swisscom is laying the fiber-optic network itself, but is open to offers from potential cooperation partners. At least four optical fibers will be laid per household and business. This is in line with the recommendations of the roundtable led by the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom). In Charrat, Swisscom will be testing the new FTTS (Fiber to the Street) broadband technology which will enable customers living outside major urban centers to benefit from the fiber-optic network.
