BRIEF: Illegal Bike Trails Worry ResidentsAUBURN, Jan 12, 2011 (KTXL-TV - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- People who frequent the Auburn State Recreation Area say illegal trails are dangerous. Cyclists are building their own paths and jumps. Cool resident Sheila Larsen rides her horse in the area, and says usually, cyclists obey the rule that horses have the right of way, but that wasn't the case one time. "Several cyclists came flying around the corner. Fortunately I was on a real steady horse but the horse and I could have gone down the hill and onto the highway." Public safety aside, park rangers say building rogue trails changes the landscape for the worst, leading to runoff and other problems. Victory Velo bike shop manager Oliver Bell says he's sympathetic to the rangers' concerns, but most of the complaints he hears could be solved with a little respect. "There are jerks who ride bikes, ride horses and hike. When two jerks run into each other it creates a bad situation. People just need to be nice to each other and such." He thinks there are plenty of trails in the area, but he does think the economy isn't helping the problem. "I think a big problem is in state funding. There's not enough oversight out there."
